Not necessarily a teacher, but he has been a teacher in so many other ways to both Grayson and I. Mr. Burgess has to be my all-time favorite teacher because he has introduced me to bluegrass and different forms of musicianship through my years at South Haven. I also want to thank Mrs. Chisham and Mrs. Freelend for everything they have done for me.

 4. What is your favorite memory from your time at South Haven?

One of my favorite memories from South Haven happened while I was waiting for a vocal lesson. I swear Grayson’s favorite song was “Baby Shark” when he was a sixth-grader. While waiting for my lesson Grayson and Brady Russell decided to play “Baby Shark” and hit rhythm sticks together. Consequently, Mom was having students take the concussion test in the old computer lab, so she came in and told us we had to be quiet because honestly, Grayson and Brady were being obnoxious on purpose to make me laugh. It is such a great memory that I will always treasure.

 6. What advice would you give to younger classmates at South Haven?

If I could leave behind any words of wisdom, it would be this. Just try. It doesn’t matter if you are a student-athlete, a musician, a theater kid, or someone else in between. Just try. If you fail, that’s alright. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and learn from the experience. It always pays to at least put in a little effort. Whether that be smiling at someone in the hallway, trying a new stunt, running a new play, practicing a challenging piece of music, or getting over stage fright. It doesn’t hurt to try. Try to be a better version of yourself. Push yourself to your limits. It might surprise you to see who you become.

 7. What is something you would like to accomplish in your lifetime?

In my lifetime, I hope to get more chances to perform with our bluegrass band “Critter Crossin’.” I dream that I have many more opportunities to spread my love and passion for country and bluegrass to others.

My favorite memory from my time at South Haven goes back to 4th grade. Our teacher at the time, Mrs. Sheets, gave us paper money throughout the year to learn how to use money. Throughout the year we could exchange money for things like extra recess, gum, or a free ‘A’ on a test. However, at the end of the year, we got to set up a Kansas fair in the classroom and ‘sell’ and buy things with the money we had left. Everything that we sold had to be Kansas-related; there were things like slim jims, banana bread, and I sold sunflower duct tape pens. This was really exciting for me and it has stuck with me since.
