Senior Class

Rachel Turek Is Class Valedictorian

Rachel Turek

Rachel as baby

Meet Rachel Turek. Rachel is the Class of 2020 Valedictorian. She has attended South Haven Schools for 13 years. Her favorite memory from high school was Football Homecoming 2019. She says, "The whole week was a blast and the half time show wasn’t too bad for all but one of us!" Rachel plans to attend Kansas State University in the Fall, majoring in Human Development and Family Sciences before beginning nursing school.

When asked who she would thank for getting her to where she is today she responded, "It’s impossible for me to pick just one person. My friends, coaches, teachers, family, and the whole community of South Haven have molded me into the best version of myself possible. I am truly blessed with the tight knit community I was raised in. From the many lessons on the court, in the classroom, or in the community I am confident in myself moving forward in life. I would love to thank everyone in person, but due to the circumstances this will have to do for now. Thank you for the best 13 years I could have imagined South Haven!"

Rachel will do great things and SHS is proud to claim her as one of our own!

Macy Palmer is Class Salutatorian

Macy PalmerMacy as child

Meet Macy Palmer. Macy is the Class of 2020 Salutatorian. Macy has been attending South Haven Schools since 8th grade. Macy says, "My favorite memory of high school was when I went to a land judging contest with FFA and it started raining. It was kind of expected to rain that day but ignored it anyway and once it started, it never stopped. People were running to their buses and stuff and I was over here hunkering down over my scantron trying to keep it dry and finish the contest. It didn't work out so well because all of our scantrons were ruined, people were sliding in the holes that were starting to fill with water, and better yet, I didn't even have a hood on my jacket. By the time we all got back on the bus, we looked like cold wet dogs."

Macy will be attending Kansas State University in the fall. She plans to major in Pre-Veterinary Medicine. Macy would like to thank her grandfather for pushing her to get to where she is now. Here is what she has to say about her grandfather, "one of the most important people in my life is my grandpa, because he encourages me to do better and always lets me know when I do great things. On every Facebook post, he will comment something almost poetic and it brings a smile to my face. He lights up my world and I don't know what I would do without him."

Macy's smile and gentle spirit will be missed next year. South Haven is so proud of you!

Mariah Newberry

laMariah NewberryMariah as childMeet Mariah Newberry. Mariah moved to South Haven five years ago. Mariah has many memories from high school, but she says her favorite memories are Coach Heater's pregame locker room pep talks.

Mariah plans to attend Cowley County Community College in the Fall. She plans to pursue her degree in Secondary Education. She would like to thank her grandparents for pushing her to be better even when she had thoughts of giving up.

Mariah, your kind and patient leadership has been a treasure to South Haven. We are so proud of you, and cannot wait to follow where life takes you. SHS is grateful you became a Cardinal!

Slade Wiley

Slade WileyMeet Slade Wiley. Slade has been a Cardinal since PSlade as a childre-School.            He is a man of few words so his interview is short and sweet!

Slade's favorite memories from high school come from playing football. Slade will be attending Butler County Community College in the fall. He plans to major in Mass Communications.

He would like to thank his parents for helping him and pushing him to get to where he is.

Slade's sense of humor will be missed. We could always count on Slade to make us laugh and provide some sort of entertainment. You will be missed greatly, Slade! We can't wait to see where life leads you.

Brittney Byers

Brittney ByersBrittney as a childMeet Brittney Byers. Brittney transferred to South Haven High School from North Carolina the summer before she began her sophomore year. She says that even though she's only been a Cardinal for three years, she feels like she's been here forever!

Brittney has many great memories from high school here, some of her favorites being the NHS trip to New York, 2020 Basketball Homecoming, game days (especially basketball game days), and scoring her 1,000th career point in basketball this year.

Brittney will be attending Cowley County Community College next year where she will continue her basketball career while studying Criminal Justice. She plans to become a police officer after finishing school.

When asked who she would like to thank for getting her this far she responded, "I can't really thank just one person for getting me to where I am because so many people have had a huge impact on my life, therefore, I'd like to think both of my parents, my friends, my teammates, coaches, family, and the community. I have been welcomed into the school and community like I've always been a part of it and I'm so grateful for the support and love of the Cardinal Family."

Britt, we know you will do great things and we can't wait to cheer you on, on the court and in life. You may be becoming a Tiger, but you'll always be a Cardinal!

Nathan Hadden

Nathan HaddenNathan as child

Meet Nathaniel Hadden. Nathan has gone to school at South Haven Schools since Pre-School. He has taken advantage of the dual enrollment program offered by Cowley County Community College during his senior year. He attended half days over at CCCC where he completed part of their Automotive Program. Nathan plans to attend CCCC next year and finish the Automotive Program while also receiving education to becoming a CNC Machinist.

Nathan's favorite memory from high school is being part of the band. He has been involved in the band since he was in the 5th grade. He says, "I've always loved music. I'll always remember the friendships that I had while in band."

Here is Nathan's response when asked who he would like to thank for getting him to this point, "If I could thank one person it would be my mom. I wouldn't be where I am today if she wasn't there to support and push me to do my best in everything that I do and never do anything halfway."

Nathan has a quiet personality but always offers up a greeting and a smile. Your gentle nature and kind spirit will be missed in our building next year. We wish you luck in all that you do!

Cabrie Dvorak

Cabrie Dvorak as childCabrie Dvorak

Meet Cabrie Dvorak. Cabrie has been a Cardinal since Pre-K. Cabrie has really enjoyed high school and has so many good memories. She particularly enjoyed pep rallies, athletic events, and the school dances. Her all-time favorite memory in high school was cheering on the boys at a basketball game against Caldwell that we won (👏👏👏). She says "seeing them work hard and fight for a win felt really good to watch. It was probably an even greater feeling for them to win against our 'rivals' Everyone in the crowd got involved in cheering them on with the cheerleaders. Having everyone come together and cheer on their hometown high school basketball team was overall a great thing to witness."

Next year Cabrie will be attending Cowley County Community College with plans to become a Dental Hygienist.

When asked who she would like to thank for pushing her to this point Cabrie says "people usually thanks their parents or a teacher, but I think the person that pushed me the most was my brother, Cade. While still doing his own thing in school he still managed to make sure I was doing the best I could. He also helped me with whatever he could if I needed it."

Cabrie was rarely seen without a smile on her face. Her ability to comfort those around her with her laugh and upbeat personality is rare and SHS will miss it very much! Good luck next year Cabrie, we are proud of you.
