The South Haven Board of Education meets on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 PM at the South Haven School library. If a meeting is moved from this time, or a special meeting is needed, these changes will be announced on the home page of the website and in the school calendar.

Addressing the Board of Education


BCAE Public Hearings 

The board may hold public hearings on matters which the board deems appropriate.

Public hearings will be held at a convenient time and a suitable place.

The board president or vice-president shall preside at public hearings and shall request every participant to state name, residence and purpose for speaking. After a hearing is called to order the board may delegate another individual to run the actual hearing.

BCBI Public Participation at Board Meetings  

Open Forum

The president or presiding officer may ask patrons attending if they would like to speak during the open forum. Rules for the public forum will be available from the clerk prior to the board meeting and at the meeting itself. The board president may impose a limit on the time a visitor may address the board. The board president may ask groups with the same interest to appoint a spokesperson to deliver the group’s message. Except to ask clarifying questions, board members shall not interact with speakers at the open forum.

Patron-Requested Agenda Items

Any patron may request addition of a specific agenda item and shall notify the superintendent {seven} days prior to the meeting and state the reason(s) for the request. The superintendent shall determine whether the request can be solved by staff without the patron’s appearance before the board. If not, the superintendent shall consult with the board president, and the patron’s request may be placed on the next regular board meeting agenda.

Handling Complaints

The superintendent may refer complaints to the board only if a satisfactory adjustment cannot be made by a principal, the superintendent, or other appropriate staff members.

Meet the Members of the Board of Education

Suzie Bacon

No biography submitted. Suzie was first elected to the USD 509 Board of Education in 2011.

Jeremy Goeckel

Jeremy is a 2001 graduate of Hanover High School. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University and a MBA from Baker University. Jeremy is employed by Westar Energy as manager, substation electrical and is a licensed professional engineer. Jeremy is married to Abigail Yunker who is a 2003 graduate of South Haven High School. Jeremy, Abigail and their two children have lived in South Haven since 2011. Jeremy was elected to the Board of Education in 2013.

Lewis Kuchar, Jr.

Lewis grew up in South Haven KS and attended all of his 13 years of Elementary and Secondary Education in the South Haven Schools.  He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Agri-Business.  He has been employed in Sales and Management of John Deere Dealerships for nearly 20 years. He is the Location Manager of P&K Equipment in Blackwell OK.  He is married, and he and his wife Lisa have four boys. Lewis is and has been involved in public service most of his adult life.  Lewis has served on the Township Board as Trustee where they lived prior to moving back to South Haven, and is currently serving as Treasurer of the Guelph Township and in on the Chamber of Commerce Board in Blackwell OK.  Lewis was elected to the Board of Education in 2015.

Steve Nicholson

Steven Nicholson graduated from South Haven High School in 1990. He is married to Kalli Nicholson, and has three children Shane, Alex and Abigail. He is employed at Globe Engineering Inc. Steve serves the community in many fashions including city council, Captain for the South Haven fire department, and member of the fair board. Steve was elected to the Board of Education in 2013.

Bryan Smith

Bryan is a graduate of South Haven High School (2000).  Bryan received his bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University in 2004, and a Master’s in Business Administration from Newman University in December 2012.  Bryan has worked in aerospace for over 8 years and currently employed at Hawker Beechcraft as a Supply Chain Manager. He is married to Julia, and has two children, Madison and Alex, currently enrolled in South Haven School. Bryan has been a member of the Board of Education since 2011.

Luke Theurer

Luke grew up in South Haven and was a member of the1993 graduation class. He went on to college at Dodge City Community College, earning an Associates Degree in Farm and Ranch Management. Luke then continued his education working at a feedyard in Garden City. In 2004 he started farming on his own. He has been married to his wife Amy since 1997, and has two sons, Colby and Ethan, who attend South Haven Schools. Luke enjoys spending time with the boys working on the farm and building his operation. Luke has been a member of the Board of Education since 2011.
Glennis Zimmerman
Glennis is a graduate of Ellsworth KS High School, and has a BS from Kansas State University and Master's and Education Specialist degrees from Wichita State University. She spent 26 years in public education as a math teacher and administrator, retiring in 2009 from the Winfield KS Public Schools, where she was assistant superintendent. Glennis and husband Jay (a South Haven graduate)  farm north of South Haven, and Glennis substitute teaches and volunteers as webmaster for South Haven Schools. They have four children, three of whom are South Haven graduates. Mark is a civil engineer, Jill is an agriculture extension agent, Travis farms, and Ty is a high school principal. Glennis and Jay have eight grandchildren, three of whom attend South Haven. Glennis was first elected to the Board of Education in 2009.
