HS Basketball


The South Haven Cardinals finish the season with seven wins and seventeen losses. The boys made it to the SCBL tournament for the first time in two years. They had their first sub state win in three years and had seven wins compared to the last two years with a combination of 5.

Braydyn Wilkey and Lane Browning lead the team as the two seniors. Braydyn lead the team with 17.6 points and 7 rebounds while Lane lead the state in steals with 3.5 a game.Their favorite game was Cedar Vale/Dexter “We really worked hard as a team”. Lane said. The team's strength was their offense and driving capabilities. South Haven’s hardest opponent was Sedan because of their post game. Good Job Boys!

Girls Season Wrap-Up

On Monday, February 27th, the South Haven girls basketball ended their basketball season. The girls lost their first round substate game 44-25 to Argonia (10-11) at Attica. Overall, the team had an ending record of 6-15 under the coaching of Mike and Rheanne Heater.

The three seniors were Summer Moncivias, Carolyn Culp, and Alaina Resendez. They were all asked a few group questions to see how they felt about their season.

The ladies were asked what their favorite moment of the season was, the girls all said the time they went bowling was because it brought the team together. The strengths of the team was that they could push the ball up the floor and having good sportsmanship during their games. The girl’s said their best game was against Cedar Vale on their homecoming night, although their worst game would have to be the Flint Hills game.

Cowley County Tournament Week


Every year, Cowley County Community College hosts a SCBL tournament. Teams from the South Central Border League compete in multiple games for the title. Last year, Sedan won the championship.

South Haven did not win the championship, but they played their best to make it in and compete in the official bracket. South Haven’s qualifying round was against the Flint Hills Mustangs in Udall. South Haven won the game 54-46 in overtime on Braydyn Wilkey’s 15 points and 9 rebounds, and Lane Browning’s 13 points and 4 steals.

The next team South Haven was matched up with was Sedan on their home court. Sedan beat South Haven 38-82, putting South Haven into the loser's bracket for the remainder of the tournament. Notable stats that game were Braydyn Wilkey’s 14 points and Lane Browning’s 7 rebounds. Kiefer Brewer had 14 points and 9 rebounds to help Sedan win.

In South Haven’s next game was against West Elk at Cowley County Community College. West Elk beat South Haven 35-67 in a tough loss. West Elk’s Andrew Hurt put up 15 points to help West Elk defeat South Haven. Colby Theurer had 8 points on 4 for 5 shooting for the Cardinals. South Haven’s loss to West Elk put South Haven in the consolation bracket against Central for 7th place.

South Haven’s last game against Central was once again hosted at Cowley County Community College. Both these teams had lost twice to put them in the position they were at. South Haven lost once again to give Central the 7th place position. Central’s Dustin Handlin had an excellent game with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 steals.

For the 1st place title, Caldwell, who was the number two seed, and Sedan, who was the number one seed, both made it to the championship game. Both these teams have had great seasons and most were expecting one of these two to win it all. During the game, Sedan’s Kiefer Brewer had an astounding 22 points for Sedan. Caldwell’s Dylin Volvka had 18 points to help them seal the deal and win the game, 58-52 to give Caldwell the title.

The Cardinal Women Take Seventh


The Lady Cardinals started out the SCBL tournament as the 6th seed. The (3-6) losing record was not good enough for them and hope to change their season around going into the tournament.

The play in games consisted of Argonia vs Oxford and Cedar Vale/Dexter vs Central. Argonia and Cedar Vale/Dexter advance as Oxford and Central play each other for ninth place. Central won beating Oxford 30 to 22 for ninth place.

Bracket play started on the 17th at the higher seed. Flinthills(69) vs Cedar Vale Dexter(44), West Elk(32) vs Argonia(49), Udall(33) vs Caldwell (40).

South Haven faced a tough game at Sedan for their first game in the tournament. It came down to the higher field goal percentage on Sedan’s side beating South Haven 48 to 27. Justi Sims lead the game with fifteen points nine coming from three-pointers. Rachel Turek led South Haven with seven points and five steals.

The winner between Flint Hills and Caldwell were going to the finals. Flinthills depth was too much for Caldwell for a final score of 54 to 49. On the other side Argonia vs Sedan the winner faced Flint Hills in the Championship game. Sedan topped Argonia with the help of Alexis Williams eight points and and four steals.

The losers bracket held Cedar Vale/Dexter vs Udall. Peyton Webber led the Eagles to the fifth place game with nineteen points and three steals. The final score was 47 to 31.

South Haven was now in the loser's bracket having to play a tough opponent in the number two ranked West Elk Patriots winner played Udall for fifth. West Elk’s Macy Mcclendon took over with twenty points and sixteen rebound in a win 54 to 39. Cynae Wiley led South Haven with fifteen points.

South Haven played for seventh against Cedar Vale/Dexter. Lillian Bowlby led South Haven to a blowout win with eleven points and thirteen rebounds. The final score was 19 to 45.

The third place game consisted of Argonia vs Caldwell. Argonia topped Caldwell with a final score of 43 to 28. Argonia was the greatest surprise going from the seventh seed to winner the third place trophy.

The Championship game was the number one seed Flint Hills vs the number three seed Sedan. Flinthill came out on top with a final score of 36 to 39 winning the SCBL League Championship.

The Start of the Season

The high school boys basketball team has officially started their season on the 14th of November. The four year head coach Kalen Fitch and new assistant Cody Wolf are ready to get into the season. The high school boys basketball play first on December 2 vs. Udall. The boys won three games and loss 17 and hope to better themselves this year. The returning starters for the team are Garrett Bacon and Lane Browning.

In The Beginning

The High School girls basketball team has begun their season. The girls have three returning starters. Mike & Rheann Heater are starting their fourth year as head and assistant coach.

Last years record the girls were 12 and 9 and hope for another winning season. Their first game will be December 2nd verses Udall. The girls are ready for their first game.
